Last night I was sucked into the latest episode of “Sixteen and Pregnant”, an hour-long show on MTV that documents the pregnancies (and aftermath) of sixteen year olds in Middle America (because on the coasts, they would just have a back-alley abortion or flush the baby after prom…hey, I was a teenager once!). The episode I caught features Farrah from Iowa, her Bible thumping mother and her obedient father that is somehow “away on business” for the majority of the episode.

Discussions on the web raise questions about whether or not MTV is glorifying teen pregnancy at a time in America where the number of underage mothers is the highest it has been in years. It must be that JUNO font they used (yes, really). Since for some reason I feel like I could be the authority on this, I have decided to figure it out by using a simple list format.

Things that made me want to be Sixteen and Preggo:

Adorable and popular Farrah quits the cheerleading squad because the other girls are jealous of the attention she gets for being pregnant.

Making other women jealous – CHECK.

She also stopped attending high school and if/how/when she graduates is a mystery.

No more homework – CHECK.

Her maternity clothes are adorable.

Stylin’ wardrobe – CHECK.

She has the sweetest “gay best friend”.

Dude friend that won’t knock me up (again) – CHECK.

Farrah had the “smoky eye” look perfected as she gave birth in full make-up

Being young enough to figure out how the hell to wear eye makeup without looking like I got mugged – CHECK.

Things that made me NOT want to be Sixteen and Preggo:

Farrah could not go out with her friends and was often home alone taking care of baby Sophie.

Constant isolation – CHECK.

Ummm, I think that was the only part that looked like it sucked. At the end, she was trying to go to college and get a job but her mom was sick her of “belligerent anti-Christ attitude” (I wonder why dad is away all of the time?) and would not allow her to buy a used Ford Focus. While having a batshit crazy mom is not ideal, it has nothing to do with teenage pregnancy and did not make my list.

All I know is the promos for next week look too good to be true. Two obese teens from Indiana are having a baby (insert punch line here). While in labor, the girl is puking and immediately follows up the barf fest by EATING TACO BELL!!! WHILE DELIVERING A BABY!!! I can’t wait.

If that glorifies pregnancy for you, you’re beyond hope.

It’s Friday, time to get wasted!
